Important: Upcoming Liquor License Requests – Action Requested

Miramar Theater Liquor License Renewal

The Class B Tavern License  for the Miramar Theater, located at 2844-46 N. Oakland Avenue, is due for renewal in June. The MHNA Board has been monitoring activity at Miramar since early 2021 and has serious concerns about the operator of the business. After careful deliberation, MHNA is opposing this renewal.

Since late last year, there have been numerous weekly disturbances during music shows at the Miramar location involving large crowds, high traffic congestion outside the theater on Oakland Avenue, fighting both inside and outside the Miramar Theater and reported gun shots in the vicinity of the theater. These incidents have required a constant and weekly presence by the Milwaukee Police Department since January of this year to be sure activity does not become more volatile. It has negatively impacted the neighborhood and the Oakland Avenue commercial district.

Miramar’s operator also owned SITE, a nightclub in the Third Ward, which was shut down last year after a fight resulted in a murder just outside its doors. The bar, with the owner  present, was open and serving after legal closing time. (https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2021/01/21/third-ward-nightclub-surrenders-license-before-revocation-hearing/).

The best and most expedient way to voice your concerns about Miramar and oppose its liquor license renewal, is to email the license committee at license@milwaukee.gov, and the office of Aldermanic District 3 at aide3@milwaukee.gov. Be sure to include your name, mailing address, and specific details and events to support your concerns and objection.

Please also copy MHNA at issues@murrayhillna.org to let us know you are concerned and oppose the renewal of Miramar’s liquor license. We also encourage you to forward this notice to other neighbors and friends.

Here is the formal city announcement about the renewal and city contact information:

NEW Liquor License Application for Former Bikesmiths Location

A business owner/operator is applying for a Class A Malt and Class A Liquor License for a new store in the former Bikesmiths location at 2865 N. Murray Avenue on the corner of Murray and Locust.  The applicant submitted his application on May 10 to the License Division.

According to the application submitted to the license division, the business plans to sell just tobacco and alcohol products.

The MHNA Board is concerned about the addition of yet another tobacco/liquor store opening in a residential area in our community, which is already well served with a significant number of businesses selling these products.

In addition, the MHNA Board would like to ensure our Murray Hill community has an elected Alderperson representing us through the application review process for this license, so we understand more about the proposed new business. MHNA is asking that the application be held until a new Third District Alderperson is elected this fall.

The best and most expedient way to voice your concerns about this new business and liquor license application, and to request the application be held until we have an elected Alderperson, is to email the license committee at license@milwaukee.gov and the office of Aldermanic District 3 at aide3@milwaukee.gov.
