Debate Impacts to Neighborhood

From Kevin O’Conner at UWM:

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will be hosting the Democratic Presidential Debate February 11. The debate, which will be televised live on PBS and simulcast on CNN, is at 8 p.m. in the Helen Bader Concert Hall inside the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts. The building is located at 2419 East Kenwood Blvd.

Organizers of the event have worked hard to minimize the impacts of the event on the campus and surrounding neighborhood. Please note that many of the changes below are required due to security considerations. Most of the impacts will be on Thursday, February 11.

  • On Thursday, Kenwood Blvd. will be closed between Downer Ave. and Maryland Ave. The closure starts at 6 a.m. Thursday and lasts until early Friday morning. Traffic on Kenwood Blvd. will also potentially be impacted on both Wednesday and Friday due to satellite trucks parking in front of the UWM Union.

  • Additional streets south of campus will also be closed Thursday. Farwell Ave., Prospect Ave., and Stowell Ave. will be closed to traffic between Kenwood and Linwood beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday. Access will be maintained to local residences, with that access police-controlled throughout the day and night. If you have questions about access to your home, please contact the Milwaukee Police Department District One at 414-935-7213.

  • Milwaukee County Transit buses in the area of the UWM Union will be rerouted Wednesday, February 10, Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12. Exact detour information is available on the Service Alerts page of the Milwaukee County Transit website (ridemcts.com).

  • The Zelazo Center parking lot will be closed to all traffic beginning Sunday at 6 a.m. It will be closed through late Friday evening. Television trucks for the PBS broadcast and debate operation will arrive throughout the day Sunday and be staging in that lot throughout the week. Those trucks will depart on Friday night.

  • The UWM Union Garage will be closed to the public Thursday. The garage will be open both Wednesday and Friday but is expected to be at or near capacity.

  • A small number of metered parking spots on the north end of Stowell immediately adjacent to the Zelazo Center will be unavailable for parking much of the week.

This information remains subject to change as security and event plans are updated by the debate sponsors and law enforcement personnel
