MHNA meeting Sept 24: Meet our new MPD Captain; The Milwaukee Film Festival; And More….

Dear Murray Hill Members:

The typical signs of fall are about. I just moved my window air conditioners to the attic and I have used the Report It Record It phone number about a half-dozen times in the last two weeks. It is also time to start up our monthly membership meetings.

The first meeting of the season will take place at:

The Urban Ecology Center
7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 24

We have two speakers of note; first Kristopher Pollard from Milwaukee Film Festival will tell us about the diverse and entertaining selection of films that will be shown at the Downer and Oriental Theatres from September 26 through October 10. There will be over 200 films available and all within walking distance of our homes and businesses. Come and find out how to take advantage of this great opportunity, and see films that you would not otherwise get to see. Last year my wife and I saw over a dozen of the films and loved nearly every one of them.

Secondly, we have a new commander at District 1, Captain Aaron Raap, who comes from the Neighborhood Task Force office and now will need to understand our concerns and needs. Captain Raap has only been on the job for about a month so I wouldn’t expect a detailed plan of what he plans on doing in his new position, but we can show him how much we care and how important he and his staff is to us. We will also be acknowledging our appreciation to Captain Steven Basting for his dedication and contributions to making Murray a more livable neighborhood.

On a separate note, last week I was at a new event hosted at the Hotel Foster on North Ave; Opera 101. This is community outreach program brought to Milwaukee by the new Skylight Music Theatre’s artistic director, Viswa Subbaraman. It is a light-hearted basic description of what and how opera has developed over the centuries. The well attended opening evening had several of the actors and actresses who will be in the upcoming performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio. With a casual description of composition, sipping on a glass of wine, interspersed with arias from the actors and trivia questions posed to the attendees for a very enjoyable evening. The top trivia winners received a door prize of promotional goodies. The program will be held on the first Thursday of every month, omitting October and January from 7:30 to about 9:00; so the next one will be on November 3rd. It is free except for how much you wish to drink; for additional information go to http://www.skylightmusictheatre.org/shows-events/events/opera-101.

I certainly hope to see you at one of our upcoming meetings or at the Hotel Foster.
