Please Contact Alderman Kovak RE: New 300-Person Dance Club
A new proprietor has plans to reopen the space in the basement of Beans and Barley formally occupied by the “The Library Club” as a 300 person dance club.
The big problem? This club will market to college students and allow people 18 years of age to enter. These kids would mix with drinking customers over age 21. The new club would allow patrons to purchase liquor by the bottle and we believe it is a tall order to keep alcohol away from the 18-21 year old customers.
We and the MPD think this is bad policy.
The license hearing is scheduled for TOMORROW, Tuesday, October 1. (See https://milwaukee.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=2638079&GUID=52BC83CA-9BEB-4814-BF53-0DBEA788FC86 for more details). So, please email or call Alderman Nik Kovak TODAY or appear at the hearing tomorrow to express your opposition.

Why is this a bad idea?
- Alcohol related behavior contributes to a decline in the quality of life in our community and attracts more violent criminal activity.
- This club environment will be difficult to manage illegal, underage drinking.
- The atmosphere will combine very young people who are highly susceptible to negative effects of alcohol with older people who may take advantage of them.
- Research shows that intoxicated young people are at increased risk to commit or fall victim to crime. They binge-drink more than older people
- Bar owners in other states report that underage patrons of such bars “pre-party” and come to the bars already intoxicated.
- This bar will likely put increased pressure on police resources.
