Mayor Barrett, Alderman Nik Kovac, County Executive Chris Abele, Milwaukee Public Library Director Paula Kiely and representatives from HSI Properties officiated in the Ground Breaking for the new East Library on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 on the site of the former East Library. The former East library is now in piles of debris and the wood from the trees on the former library grounds have been saved for several possible uses. The stained glass and several other items were saved, recycled or sold.
The excitement in the prospect of a new library was evident in the presentations given and the enthusiasm of the community that gathered. The development of this public-private project has involved much hard work by many people over the past few years and this ceremony was an opportunity to recognize their efforts Hard hats were donned, shovels were spaded into the dirt and moved to symbolize the start of the project. The projected time for completion of the new library is Fall 2014. All were invited to come back for the opening. Visit our gallery to see photos from the event!
