EAST LIBRARY IS CLOSING

Milwaukee Public Library will hand out “I Closed East Library” mementos

at closing celebration on Saturday, June 22nd

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) invites people to “close” East Library. The library will hold a closing celebration on Saturday, June 22nd before closing its doors permanently at 5:00 pm after 45 years of service to the east side. The building will be demolished to make way for the construction of the new East Branch opening in late 2014.

What: Neighbors and residents are invited to “close” East Library and:

· Pick-up an “I Closed East Library” magnet or sticker;

· Share a memory in the East Library scrapbook by learning how to create your own East scrapbook page during the A.W.E. (Artists Working in Education) drop-in art program from 1:00-2:00 pm;

· Earn a free family pass to the Milwaukee Art Museum by posting a photo taken with an East Library memento to the “I Closed East Library” Facebook Event page or @MilwaukeePubLib Twitter feed;

· Meet Browser the Library Lion at 1:00 pm;

· Browse historical photos of East Library and renderings for the redevelopment; and,

· Enjoy refreshments.

East Library Background

The new East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) will be part of The Standard @ East Library, a multi-use development featuring 99 apartments with a 16,000 square-foot library and retail space on the first floor. The new branch will have dedicated surface parking. The development project, headed by HSI Properties, LLC, is targeted for completion in late 2014.

The architectural firm Hammel Green & Abrahamson Inc. (HGA) was selected by the Board of Trustees to design the new library space. The East library will be closed to the public from June 23 to June 30 and will reopen for service at a temporary site located at 2430 North Murray Avenue on July 1st.
