Carjacking Update from Capt. Eric Moore, District #1.

As a number of you all are already aware, on Friday, January 15th at 5:40 PM a 44 year old Milwaukee woman pulled up in front of her residence in the 2900 block of N Farwell Avenue when several teenagers pulled up in a dark vehicle. One of the actors ordered the woman out of her auto and on to the ground. He demanded her car keys and wallet. The actors left in her car and the suspect vehicle. At the time of the offense, there were uniform Milwaukee Police Department squads in the area. Unfortunately, they were not on Farwell Avenue at the time of the offense. MPD’s Carjacking Task Force immediately assisted District 1 personnel in the investigation. Over the next three days, MPD squads scoured the city in search of the victim’s vehicle and the suspects. On Monday, January 18th, shortly after 8:30 PM, two officers assigned to the Neighborhood Task Force observed the Farwell victim’s 2008 Honda CRV stopped at a red light at the intersection of N Green Bay Ave and W Capitol Drive. The vehicle was occupied by a male driver and two female passengers. The Honda subsequently entered on to Interstate 43 Southbound. The officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver accelerated away at a high rate of speed. The officers terminated their pursuit of the vehicle due to the reckless and imprudent manner in which the Honda was operating. A short time later the vehicle, which was not being pursued, struck another vehicle in the 1900 block of W Olive Street (across the street from Rufus King High School) and subsequently struck a tree. The now identified 19 year old male driver was killed instantly. The two female passengers, ages 15 and 16, suffered substantial injuries and were conveyed to a local hospital.

It is important to note that the facts of the two related incidents (carjacking & fatal accident) mirror what I have related to District 1 constituents during community meetings, e.g. victim accosted while alone, carjacking occurs, multiple juveniles involved, an attempt to impress young female juveniles by joyriding in a newer vehicle, police observe suspect vehicle and a pursuit ensues.

MPD’s investigation of the two incidents is continuing and detectives are gathering information from the injured female juveniles with the aim of identifying all of the actors in the Farwell Avenue offense.
