Summary of April MHNA Membership Meeting

We had an informative meeting Tuesday evening!  If you weren’t able to make it, here are a few of the highlights:

– There are several applications for new liquor licenses pending in the North Avenue area and other nearby locations.  We have requested community meetings be held so that neighbors have an opportunity to learn about the proposals and provide feedback.  Meeting notices will come directly from Alderman Kovac’s office via the E-Notify system, and MHNA will also forward them.

– A cool, upcoming art installation called Black Cat Alley is planned for mid-September in the alley between Prospect and Farwell, Ivanhoe and Kenilworth. Read more at www.blackcatmke.com.

– Sheldon Wasserman is our new Milwaukee County Supervisor, replacing Gerry Broderick.  He is only a week into the position, but brings a variety of experience with him including his 14 years in the state legislature and his medical experience as a practicing physician in the OB/GYN department of Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital.  He welcome feedback and input from his constituents.  His contact information is available at his County Supervisor website: http://county.milwaukee.gov/wasserman.

– Officer Kline updated neighbors on police activity in April.  The carjacking task force has been successful and is being extended.  Regarding nuisance activity, it has been a relatively quiet month.  MHNA will be posting the UWM Grant Period call data in the near future.

– Officer Kline highly recommended that residents join the online community network called “Nextdoor.”  According to their website, “Nextdoor is the private social network for you, your neighbors and your community. It’s the easiest way for you and your neighbors to talk online and make all of your lives better in the real world.”  MPD has been trained in how to use Nextdoor and is posting timely updates on crime activity to the website.  Once you join, you can tailor your settings to adjust what type of notifications you receive, and for which neighborhoods.  Please check out the website at www.nextdoor.com.  Please note that MHNA will still provide email updates on crime activity when we receive them directly from police, but your best place for timely updates is on Nextdoor.  You can read a recent Milwaukee Magazine article on Nextdoor in Milwaukee here: http://www.milwaukeemag.com/2016/04/12/nextdoor-has-milwaukee-neighbors-talking/

The next MHNA meeting will be Tuesday, May 24th at 7 PM at the UEC.  Our speaker will be a representative from Milwaukee Water Works addressing lead water pipes in Milwaukee.
